The Supervisory Fighter provides coordination, leadership, and supervision of fire prevention activities, emergency preparedness activities, and assists the facility Safety staff with safety services, for a VA Medical Center that is comprised of 27 buildings spanning 157 acres of land and two remote community based outpatient clinics. The incumbent works a 24 hour assigned shift beginning at 8:00 am, with work week cycles of 46, 56, and 64 hours. The incumbent is on duty for the entire 24 hour shift to perform duties as the Supervisory Firefighter, as well as meet the needs of the Medical Center that dictate the workflow. The incumbent serves as the Senior Station Officer of the Fire Department on an assigned firefighter shift, and directly supervises the firefighting crew; assists the Safety Manager in conducting supervision, oversight, and review of Fire Department activities at the Medical Center and associated facilities providing patient care. The incumbent may also receive assignment to supervise work crews on department of decontamination shower system, mobile hospital and other emergency preparedness assets assigned to this facility. The incumbent serves as On-Scene Commander for any fire, hazardous spill, or other emergency situation, where members of the Fire Department have been deployed to control or eliminate the hazard. The incumbent assigns work to subordinates based on priorities; sets goals and objectives; performs fire department administration duties; evaluates the work performance of subordinates; assesses and appraises performance of crew members, approves leaves, etc.
